Oh okay I spent days, several hours for 3 days hitting my
head over and over again trying to find a superior replacement for Google reader.
Now to my
sisters who I doubt have any clue what a reader is, along with many others who
fall into the trap of facebook's add smashing colorful but useless brain spam
just to check up on peoples status… I will explain a few cool things. the reader
or the RSS reader is a tool which takes a copy of every new article or photo or
video a webpage publishes. so you don’t need to go to that web site to read the
new stuff. In a reader you don’t get advertising, at least not the amount you
expect from facebook. you just get the meat, plus the way cool thing is it
holds that article.
So lets say
you like a website. lets use theCoconutMama.com which I really love or loved
about 8 months ago and wanted to know everything I could about using cocoanut
oil. well momma does put out a lot of information, daily she puts 6 or more
articles up. so what am I to do? go to her page every day read the new articles
and flip thru the rest until I think I am back up to speed?
with a
reader it holds all the updated articles it tells you which ones you haven't
read and in its title bar it gives you a snippet of what is under in the
article… so you can skip what doesn’t interest you.
here is
what I like. in 20 minutes with a reader you can cover up to 20 websites all
their articles and not see one advertisement. glory days!
But my
fabulous reader, Google Reader, just up and stopped. talk about fists in the
air?
Feedly is
the name of its replacement. and Feedly is a pretty good reader its fast and
mostly free. but, if all you want is the written articles without photos or
videos. Feedly is pretty good. fast is a point. click on a link in other
readers and its like you have dial up modem it takes for ever just to bring up
a link. let alone a whole video. very stupid. but feedly is fast and for the
free part its not bad. I give it oh, 7 stars of ten.
why? the
design of the page is real hard to get along with for me. first off you might
get a photo, always nice. but you only get the top half of the photo. you have
to scroll down and then you see the bottom half and have to imagine what the
whole looks like. totally dumb surely they have to have some quality control
but no they been in business for half a year and cant get their page to fit
around simple photos. talk about video? messed up as well. scrolling thru the
articles gets them all messed up. I got very mad at Feedly. but it’s a 7 or 8
star still easy to migrate from Google to Feedly in one click so I am not
saying don’t but I still was missing how well Google did with videos and
graphics
I found in
all my funny tries AOL has a reader that was amazing! really amazing I cant
start to tell you it was fast it was designed to fetch videos and graphics and I
was tickled to migrate my exported file from feedly to AOL… but I give them a 4
stars.
What you
say? you loved it but four stars?
yeah, I am
as mad as heck at them.. they censor EVERYTHING! like omg in adding a new
website, you just click add new site paste the website in and click add. nice
right? nope
"cannot
find web site"
they lie to
us!
I can bring
up the feed on feedly or any other reader out there. but AOL has a very strict code
of what they feel is… well I guess family friendly? if it does not agree with
their religious or I assume political bias they wont let you have it on your
reader. I guess if you want a site that is much like Net Nanny Yeah then I suppose
you ought to start your 4 year old out on AOL perfectly safe for them… but I wont
put up with censorship.
Lists of
other services. many had bad design most were incredibly slow loading… and then…
first off
let me put this in. I went with Hootsuite; I couldn’t find really
a way to get facebook into a reader. they used to let us do it. I bet you seen
a link in facebook years ago that said add to RSS reader. they don’t do that
now, very secure you cant follow someone using a reader. oh well.
but Hootsuite
does cut down on the clutter and ADVERTISEMENTS The free version of Hootsuite
is actually very handy when it comes to keeping up with Face book one of the
exceptional things about hootsuite is that it remembers everyone, it doesn’t just
have a post vanish after a day or so, in a way then it’s a log of all facebook
posts. to me this is handy but I regress
I found the
ideal rss reader, its called INOreader, the address is www.inoreader.com I don’t
know why they don’t… you know make themselves more visible. True the design isn't
perfect but it is the very best that I have found so far, the first thing I liked
about this is its intuitive. really easy to just hit a button and know what is
going to happen. add a webpage with just a click and you are on your way! and
its very fast. no problems at all with load times, I can see the whole picture
when it loads. there are tons of things, anyhow I didn’t want to write a book
but try it really INOreader is worth a look, well unless you got a 4 year old
wow, I would pay AOL if they would stop their Gestapo!
Just sayin'
