New Math

New Math

Where Kilo does not equal ten
(some nerd must have thought that one up).

Well okay you go to Speedtest.net and get great numbers (we hope)
but are you paying attention to the letters after your huge numbers?

When I am hooked into my VPN and check with Speedtest.net I normally get about 8Mb up and around 12Mb down

Now here is where I scratch my chin:
a Mb is not a MB
1 Gigabyte is actually 1024 MB (big B).
1MB is actually 8Mb (Small B)
so interpret that to what you see in your torrent client you see you are getting upload speeds of hopefully 3MB, and upload speeds of around .8MB

one MB is 8 Mb
so .8MB is 6.4Mb that is about half of what speed test said I could get.

a 3MB download which would rock is actually 3 x 8 again or 27Mb
as I generally only see around 12Mb down that means 12/8 or 1.5MB is the best upload speed I generally will see.

Now that being said. how long will it take me to get one GB uploaded so I can start seeing a better ratio? a pretty long time at these speeds (put plug here for seed boxes)

.8MB up on my torrent per second is 288MB an hour, to get me one Gig would take me 3.555 hours.

but, my poor computer really doesn’t get that good of speed all the time and I loose peers because their clients go with faster seed boxes. truth be told use your bonuses. My little 4GB ram computer can handle 40 seeding torrents at a time and I get about one 250 point bonus every other day.

I hope this helps someone. took me some research to figure all this out myself.

If my numbers are messed up and you are a geek or nerd or whatever and can post a rebottle I hold no grudge I am just an old fart myself trying to keep up with all you kids. ha and its always nice to watch good movies for free.
